Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction and secondary corrective surgery are specialised procedures designed to restore breast shape, symmetry and confidence following cancer treatment, previous surgery or significant physical change.
Mr Bhagwat Mathur had specialist training in breast reconstruction and microsurgery at the
prestigious Canniesburn unit in Glasgow and at the St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford with the stalwarts in this specialty. He was then appointed as substantive consultant in the same unit. He has been performing breast reconstruction and secondary corrective surgery for the last 25 years in the UK. Mr Mathur has published his technical innovations, refinements, case series and book chapters in this specialty of interest.
He is presenting his work internationally. He is the patron and the founding member of Breast Reconstruction and Aesthetic Surgery Association of India (BRASA) and is actively working towards Breast Cancer Reconstruction Awareness in the society, education and training of the surgeons.
Breast reconstruction following cancer and breast removal (mastectomy) can be performed as an immediate option on the day or can be done later as a delayed procedure at a convenient time and fitness level. There is an increasing trend and demand towards risk reduction mastectomy and immediate reconstruction in high risk, family history BRCA positive women.
DIEP flap reconstruction is one of the most established forms of breast reconstruction, using skin and fat from the lower abdomen to create a new breast through advanced microsurgical techniques. An added benefit for these patients is an abdominal contouring effect, a tummy tuck. Where the abdomen is not suitable, alternative donor areas such as the thighs, back or buttocks may be considered to achieve a natural-looking result.
Not every patient is suitable for, or wishes to undergo, reconstruction using their own tissue. In such cases, one or two-stage reconstruction using silicone implants and / or fat grafting may be appropriate alternatives.
Having performed microsurgical DIEP flap reconstruction for over 25 years, Mr Mathur has evolved his practice to focus on implant-based reconstruction, fat transfer, and extended latissimus dorsi flap techniques, offering tailored, aesthetic breast reconstruction solutions that align with each patient’s needs, health and goals.
He has mastered the techniques of final aesthetic touch-ups and secondary corrections like size and shape symmetrisation of breasts, fat grafting, nipple areola reconstruction and ‘dog ears’ removals. Mr Mathur also offers nipple reconstruction using nipple share technique with outstanding aesthetic results. He has published a series of cases that utilised this technique registering very high overall satisfaction in breast reconstruction patients.
Breast Conservation Surgeries (BCS) invariably need post operative radiotherapy which causes scarring and severe breast deformities like loss of lower or outer part of the breast, shortening, distortion of nipple and marked asymmetry of breasts. Mr Mathur has an artistic eye, sculptor’s touch and a genuine passion and experience for correction of these irregularities.
Patients seeking breast reconstruction and size shape corrections are encouraged to book a consultation with Mr Mathur for detailed discussion and treatment planning at our London or Essex clinics.

Frequently asked questions
What techniques are used for breast reconstruction?
Several techniques may be used, including implant-based reconstruction, fat grafting, latissimus dorsi (LD) flap reconstruction and combination approaches. While DIEP flap reconstruction remains an option for selected patients, many reconstructions now focus on achieving refined, aesthetic results using less invasive or staged techniques. Mr Mathur selects the most appropriate method based on health, previous treatments, skin quality and desired outcomes, ensuring results that are balanced, natural and durable.
Am I suitable for breast reconstruction or secondary correction?
Suitability depends on factors such as overall health, previous surgery, radiotherapy, body shape and personal preferences. During consultation, Mr Mathur carries out a detailed assessment to determine which reconstructive or corrective options are safest and most appropriate. Not all patients require complex reconstruction – some benefit greatly from targeted secondary procedures that improve shape, symmetry or contour with less extensive surgery.
What can I expect as a patient undergoing breast reconstruction or secondary correction with Mr Mathur?
You can expect a highly personalised, consultant-led experience. Your care begins with a thorough consultation at Kirbha Clinic’s partnering facilities in London or Essex, where options, risks and expectations are discussed in detail. Surgery is carefully planned and performed using refined techniques, with close attention to symmetry, proportion and scarring. Post-operative care includes structured follow-up, clear aftercare guidance and direct access to your surgical team, ensuring reassurance and continuity throughout recovery.
What is the recovery process like?
Recovery varies depending on the type of reconstruction or correction performed. Most patients experience swelling and discomfort initially, which settles gradually over several weeks. Light activities can usually be resumed within two weeks, while more strenuous exercise may take longer. Mr Mathur provides clear recovery timelines and ongoing support to ensure safe healing and optimal results.
Will the results look natural?
Achieving a natural, proportionate result is central to Mr Mathur’s surgical philosophy. His approach combines technical precision with an artistic understanding of form, balance and symmetry. Whether reconstructing or refining the breast, the aim is to create results that feel comfortable, look natural under clothing, and restore confidence as well as physical form.
