Lumps & Bumps (milia, Cysts, Lipoma, Cherry Angioma)
What Are Skin Lumps and Bumps?
Skin lumps and bumps are very common and usually represent benign (non-cancerous) growths or blocked skin structures. They can appear anywhere on the face or body and may vary in size, colour, texture, and firmness. Some develop slowly over time, while others may appear suddenly. Although most are harmless, their appearance can cause concern, particularly if they change in size or occur on visible areas such as the face, neck, or hands.
Common types of lumps and bumps include milia, cysts, lipomas, and cherry angiomas. Each has different causes and characteristics, but they share the feature of forming a noticeable change in the skin’s surface or underlying tissue.
Milia
Milia are tiny, white or yellowish bumps that commonly appear on the face, especially around the eyes, nose, cheeks, and forehead. They form when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin rather than shedding naturally. Milia are not inflamed or infected and are not related to acne. They can occur at any age and may be associated with sun damage, heavy skincare products, or skin trauma.
Cysts
Cysts are closed sacs that form beneath the skin and are often filled with fluid, keratin, or other material. They usually feel smooth and mobile and may gradually increase in size. Epidermoid and pilar cysts are among the most common types. Cysts can develop due to blocked hair follicles or skin injury and may become inflamed or uncomfortable. They can also rupture if infected. Scalp, face, back, and scrotum are commonly affected areas.
Lipomas
Lipomas are soft, fatty lumps that grow slowly under the skin. They are usually painless and feel rubbery or dough-like when pressed. Lipomas most commonly occur on the forehead, nape of the neck, shoulders, arms, back, and thighs, and are linked to genetic factors and ageing. They are not dangerous but may cause discomfort or cosmetic concern depending on their size and location.
Cherry Angiomas
Cherry angiomas are small, bright red or purple spots caused by clusters of tiny blood vessels. They often appear on the trunk, arms, and shoulders and become more common with age. Although harmless, cherry angiomas can bleed if knocked and may be mistaken for other vascular lesions.
Understanding and Managing Lumps & Bumps
Most skin lumps and bumps are benign, but professional assessment is important to confirm their nature and rule out more serious conditions. At Kirbha Clinic in London, Essex, Cambridge, Norwich, and Brighton, skin lesions are carefully examined to determine their type and behaviour.
Where appropriate, benign lesions such as milia, cysts, lipomas, and cherry angiomas can be managed with minor surgical procedures under local anaesthetic. Understanding what type of lump or bump you have helps guide safe, effective care and provides reassurance about your skin health.
