Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy
What Is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to restore the shape, volume, and appearance of a breast following mastectomy or partial breast removal due to cancer. The goal is to create a natural-looking breast that complements the patient’s body, improving physical symmetry and supporting emotional wellbeing after cancer treatment.
Why Reconstruction May Be Needed
A mastectomy, performed to remove cancerous tissue and breast, can leave a breast absent or significantly altered in shape. Even when cancer is successfully treated, patients may experience emotional and psychological impacts from the change in their body. Breast reconstruction helps restore confidence, balance, and body image, while allowing patients to feel whole again.
Types of Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction can be tailored to each patient’s anatomy, treatment history, and personal goals. Options include:
- Implant-based reconstruction: Silicone implants are used to recreate breast volume, often in one or two stages.
- Autologous tissue reconstruction: Tissue is taken from the patient’s own body – such as the abdomen (DIEP flap), back (latissimus dorsi flap), or other donor areas – to reconstruct the breast. This provides a natural feel and appearance.
- Fat grafting / lipofilling: Fat harvested from areas such as the thighs, abdomen, or flanks can be used to refine shape, add volume, or correct contour irregularities.
- Nipple reconstruction: Techniques such as flap procedures or nipple-sharing may be used to recreate the nipple (with tattooing used to create the areola), completing the aesthetic result.
Understanding the Condition
Breast reconstruction is highly individual, depending on the patient’s anatomy, prior treatments, and preferences. At Kirbha Clinic in London and Essex, patients benefit from a consultant-led, personalised approach, ensuring careful planning, safe surgical techniques, and continuity of care throughout recovery.
Reconstruction can be performed immediately after mastectomy or as a delayed procedure. Multiple techniques may be combined to achieve the best aesthetic and functional results, supporting both physical confidence and emotional recovery after cancer treatment.
